Three UK Creative Students Win Major National Award
Following a record number of submissions from around the country for the 4th annual EIZO Student Award, we are down to the final three winners.
Considered one of the nation’s most prestigious student creative awards, the EIZO Student Award, run by leading visual technology solutions company EIZO Limited, was open to both film and photography entries. This year a staggering 406 students from colleges and universities around the country entered, making it the best year yet.
This year's judges include photographers, videographers and a journalist, all experts in their field. Tim Flach, a highly successful and acclaimed London-based animal photographer, Alistair Taylor-Young an esteemed British photographer and film director and Helen Jennings, an editor, curator and co-founder of award-winning media brand Nataal.
Robert Kiernander and Udochukwu Emeka-Okafor, both from Arts University Bournemouth, and Zoe Storer, from the University for the Creative Arts, have been crowned this years winners. They will each receive an EIZO ColorEdge CG279X monitor and an exclusive, once in a lifetime placement at one of our judge’s studios.
Robert Kiernander from Arts University Bournemouth work ‘Hours Worth’ is about the brief of tragedy, and how Covid-19 has affected Robert in his local area. The photographs are documents of his one hours worth of exercise allowed during lockdown and was chosen by Alistair Taylor-Young as his favourite entry.
Alistair added, “I chose ‘Hours worth’ for explaining tragedy in the context of time and observation use of delicate colours and composition. It shows a lovely instinct for reportage and an excellent use of the restrictive one hour.”
On winning the award Robert said, “I am over the moon to have a work placement with Alistair Taylor-Young, and gain valuable experience and knowledge and thank you for selecting my work for this year’s competition.”
Udochukwu Emeka-Okafor from Arts University Bournemouth film ‘Beings’ which comments on masculinity and feminity through androgynous fashion was selected by Helen Jennings.
Helen said of Udochukwu’s work: “Her film has a playful energy, excellent casting and is delivering a timely message about gender. The voiced archive interview, retro, filmic feeling and music all also bring layers of interest, which makes it an excellent piece of work.”
On winning the award Udochukwu said, “I am over the moon to be one of the winners of the 2020 EIZO Student Award! This is a huge achievement for me. The more I learn about photography and film, the more passionate I become about developing my career within the industry. I look forward to my work placement with Helen Jennings, whose work I very much admire. Thanks again to EIZO for this invaluable opportunity!”

Zoe Storer from the University for the Creative Arts work ‘Body’ is a series of images that focuses on the body and was picked by Tim Flach.
Within the last year Zoe has been trying to come to terms with issues she has towards her own body and in this series has created grotesque, horror-like images of the body, showing it with an oily, moist texture covering the skin to accentuate the human form and creating a raw meat like image.
Tim Flach commented saying, “What interested me in Zoe’s work was that this series of images operate in an ambiguous way. Although these images are evidently human in form, they evoke something other.”
On winning the award Zoe said, “Being one of the EIZO prize winners was an unexpected, but very welcome surprise. The EIZO competition has allowed my work the chance to be viewed and critiqued by professionals outside my academic environment. It also enabled me to be inspired by the work of students from other universities, whilst in lockdown.”
