EIZO Student Award 2019 Winner: Maia Pavey

Maia Pavey is a London based documentary photographer and artist, who is graduating from Falmouth University with a BA (Hons) in Photography in July 2019.

Pavey uses the camera to investigate themes of memory, space and time, ranging with a use of different processes of analogue and digital techniques. She is also interested in returning to the same spaces that are personal to her, using the deep contrasts of light and dark to convey her emotions and the emotions of others.

Her most recent project "Chez Moi, De Loin" (2018 - present) encapsulates all the elements that she is interested about. Utilising her own photography, family archival images, drawings and found documents, she tells stories from within her grandparents home to comment on these ontological topics (time, memory, space) and cultural topics of French and English background, all the while, creating work that is very personal and unique to her.

It is this project that Benedict Redgrove selected as his favourite entry in this years EIZO Student Award with him commenting saying: “Maia’s work is beautifully observed, just really gets inside you and you can hear the sounds, the feel of the place. This one is beautiful.”
